Things I Have Learned So Far!

The things I have learned so far is endless. From the second you wake up morning (figuring out how to get out of the mosquito net in the dark) until you go to bed (Learning to put a blanket in front of the door so no unwanted insects can get in) you are constantly learning. Here is a list of just some of the things I have learned:

  • Studying abroad was a great decision.
  • It will take you 20 minutes longer to leave school because you will be mobbed by kids to give about a hundred more hugs, which is definitely not a bad thing!
  • The people in Tanzania are some of the most selfless people I have ever met.
  • Kids are kids no matter where you are, they all learn, joke and play just the same.
  • Your hair will be possibly the most exciting thing ever to the students- it will be pulled and “made pretty,” leaving your hair in a crazy disaster.
  • Even though the students speak English there is still a huge communication barrier.
  • Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is not a joke- it’s a lot of work!
  • You will miss American food, but the food here is good in its own way.
  • Everyone will be your friend until they realize that you aren’t going to buy anything from them.
  • If you do not know what people are saying in Swahili they love to explain it to you and have you practice saying it.
  • If you reply to “Mambo” with “Poa” you become one hundred times cooler.
  • You can instantly become someone’s sister.
  • You walk to school rain or shine!
  • There is no such thing as being not prepared for a lesson in Tanzania (Although, it definitely pays off to be prepared!)
  • The students will say, “Thank you for the good lesson” after every lesson no matter how good bad it was.
  • Kids will do anything for a sticker!
  • Everything is “Pole Pole” (Slowly, slowly)
  • Tea time is a must.
  • Going on safari is the most amazing thing ever.
  • No matter how many zebras, elephants, or wildebeest you see it is still exciting.
  • Hippo pools STINK!
  • You will get laughed at if you say bless you when someone sneezes.
  • Lizards do not make good roommates!
  • And last but certainly not least I have confirmed that I absolutely love teaching and this definitely is what I want to do the rest of my life!
